Purchasing IP Blocks

IP Blocks:

  • Usually a Public Address which need to be accessed is been purchased.
  • IP addresses are assigned to networks in different sized ‘blocks'. 
  • Size of the ‘block' assigned is written after an oblique (/), which shows the number of IP addresses contained in that block. 
  • For example, assigned a “/16”, they receive around 64,000 IPv4 addresses. 
  • Lower the number after the oblique, the more addresses contained in that “block”.

IANA and Regions:

  • Internet Assigned Number Authority is an organisation that looks after the Purchasing of the IP Address.
  • Every continent is divided into separate Region:
    • AFRINIC (Africa Region)
    • APNIC(Asia and Pacific Region)
    • ARIN(Canada,USA and Caribbean Islands)
    • LACNIC(Latin America and Caribbean Islands)
    • RIPE NCC (Europe,Middle East and Central Asia)
